MULATU ASTATKE & HELIOCENTRICS (Jazz/Funk - ETH)
Those who remember Bill Murray's wanderings in Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers" will already be delighted by the idea of a concert by Ethiopian jazz funk legend Mulatu Astatke. Rediscovered a few years ago on a volume of an Ethiopian compilation, veteran Mulatu Astatke is officially the father of ethio-jazz, a hybrid genre that he created at the end of the 60s. Still active, today Mulatu endeavours and succeeds in a new project with the assistance of electro-psychedelic collective The Heliocentrics, who have notably collaborated with alchemists Madlib and DJ Shadow. The music born from this meeting is close to the vintage recordings of Mulatu: we can hear the leader's curious vibraphone, serpentine brass, spiralling melodies, dense, hypnotic songs, both cerebral and oozing big bead of sweat... to be savoured live at the Ardentes.
