Founder member of the abstract hip-hop label Anticon (Sage Francis, 13 & God, Buck 65?), Why? are distancing themselves more and more from hip-hop and venturing onto folk and indie paths to produce an unclassifiable kind of hip-hop-folk. Inspired and gifted noodler, Yoni Wolf, previously officiator of the project CLOUDDEAD, is at the helm of this unusual and completely nutty trio. Comprising hip-hop noodling, pop orchestration and catchy melodies, the music of these Californians constantly innovates and offers up cheekily beautiful nuggets, for example, Alopecia, , their third, wildly poetic album. Each track is effervescent and unexpected. Somewhere between Brian Wilson, Pavement and Beck, Why? is part of a tradition of free artists who refuse to go round in circles.
